Fondly regarded as the Queen City of the South, there are quite a lot of things that make Cebu City stand out.

Located literally at the heart of the Philippines, Cebu City is one of the major cities in the country that play a pivotal role in history as well as industrial development. While most people see Cebu as an exciting summer getaway, there is more to this beautiful city than its tasty Lechon, picturesque landscapes, and powdery white sand beaches. As an important business center in the country, the city proves to be a pivotal key player in economic progress, considering its rapid growth as an industrial hub.

However, amidst modern innovations and tall skyscrapers, the city has never lost that relaxed and laid-back atmosphere. In fact, that is part of the city’s subtle but intriguing charm: an iconic fusion of urban and island living.

In this regard, residents of Cebu have likened their lifestyles to that of one in perpetual summer vacation. As a result, the lifestyle in Cebu is predominantly relaxed despite having the conveniences and modernity in progressive and thriving cities. Truly living up to its moniker as the Queen of the South, Cebu City presents an alternative lifestyle that is beyond conventional, upbeat, and unique. Indeed, Cebu City caters to individuals that are wishing for a more diverse and eclectic scene where various opportunities are plentiful, tourism is thriving and the ambiance, relaxed.

  • Cebu City is the country’s oldest city. First discovered by Ferdinand Magellan, Cebu became the first Spanish colony of the Philippines. In 1565, the Treaty of Cebu was signed by Cebu’s then-ruler Rajah Tupas marking the official date when Cebu became a Spanish colony.

  • Fort San Pedro is the country’s oldest and smallest fort. This fort in Cebu City was built during the Spanish occupation and was a bulwark against local attackers. After some time, the fort served as a bastion of resistance of the Filipino revolutionaries in Cebu, barracks for American troops, a school, a refugee camp during the Second World War and an army camp thereafter.

  • The University of San Carlos in Cebu City is one of the oldest schools in the Philippines and Asia. It can be traced back to the Jesuits-founded Colegio de San Ildefonso in 1595 and was closed in 1769. Sometime in 1783, the school reopened under a different name (Colegio-Seminario de San Carlos), which attained university status in 1948.

  • The oldest Christian relic in the Philippines is found in Cebu. Made by Flemish artisans in Europe, the Santo Niño de Cebu was a gift presented by Ferdinand Magellan to Rajah Humabon and his wife for their baptism into the Catholic faith. To commemorate the said event, Sinulog is celebrated. Sinulog is considered the most prominent and grandest festival in Asia and is celebrated on the third Sunday every January to honor the holy child.

  • As the center of the country itself, Cebu is considered as one of the most accessible islands in the Philippines. While Cebu is certainly not the kind of place you would visit for a city break, it presents a myriad of activities that do not require you to venture too far from the city.

A prime location

Manila aside, Cebu is one of the best cities in the Philippines to live if you wish to be amidst a thriving and bustling city. Apart from having some of the largest shopping malls, the city hosts some of the top hospitals with high-end facilities, extravagant beach resorts and recognized universities. More importantly, Cebu is pretty much in proximity to everything considering its strategic location. Domestic flights from Cebu usually do not take more than an hour and as the city has its own international airport, flying to and from foreign places is made more accessible.

Prolific business and career opportunities

At a glance, Cebu might seem like a summer island that tourists come to frolic and relax. However, the city is not all play. Proving to be one of the most established economic centers outside Metro Manila, Cebu presents a substantial cause as one of the leading business hubs in the country. Cebu hosts a number of growing industries ranging from real estate, business process outsourcing, information technology, and so many more. As a result of the city’s rapid industrialization over the years, a myriad of job opportunities was created, which means the likelihood of gaining employment in the city is high.

Avenue for alternative lifestyles

The city caters to a myriad of lifestyles. Nocturnal individuals who love the nightlife will undoubtedly appreciate the city’s fair share of bars, clubs, and discotheques. Similarly, those who wish to retire by the beach can certainly do so with the city’s many pristine beach properties.
